So that Fake Steve Jobs quote…
…made me think of this scene in the Matrix where Cypher is betraying Keanu’s crew:
Cypher: You know, I know this steak doesn’t exist. I know that when I put it in my mouth, the Matrix is telling my brain that it is juicy and delicious. After nine years, you know what I realize?
[Takes a bite of steak]
Cypher: Ignorance is bliss.
It’s easy to think Tech is made by robots or technicians in mutli-billion dollar labs, who go home to their comfortable lives each day (the technicians not the robots, that’s less easy to think).
But most high-tech requires low-tech. And low tech is cheap. And cheap means productions lines and exploitation isn’t that hard to imagine.
If I buy a new TV it may be manufactured in ethical conditions in Taiwan, Korea or Japan. But what about the metal contained in the capacitors where was that sourced? How would I ever know?
That sucks. It’s like ignorance is being forced on us.
If we could see a ‘human suffering’ price next to prices listed in our favourite shop, well, we would live different.
I just hope I can think of ways to live different already, I hope people stand up for those who suffer and I hope that I’m one of them.
